College Kids Are Not Professionals...Yet

Overheard today on ESPN Radio's Tirico and Van Pelt, discussing the horrid record of Washington State's two major college football teams:
Van Pelt: You know, it's always a tricky situation putting down college athletes, because they're not professionals, you know...
Tirico: Yeah, they're not getting paid...
Van Pelt: But these guys are bad...

What is it about professional life that legitimates the kind of criticism you hear on sports radio shows? By the way, being a high school athlete was never enough to limit criticism from the local paper, so I can't quite identify with the sentiment, but it's interesting nonetheless.
